Frequently Asked Questions

Is Osteopathy Safe?

Yes, osteopathy is a very safe form of healthcare that works with the body’s own ability to heal and restore balance. It’s suitable for people of all ages, from newborns to older adults.

To qualify in the UK, osteopaths complete a four-year degree that includes over 1,000 hours of hands-on clinical training. They are registered with the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC), which sets and maintains the professional standards we follow.

As NHS-recognised Allied Health Professionals, osteopaths are trained to assess, diagnose, and treat independently. They also know when to refer you to a GP or another healthcare specialist if needed.

According to patient feedback, 96.4% rate their experience with osteopathy as ‘satisfied’ or ‘very satisfied’.

What to Expect at My First Appointment?

At your initial appointment, I’ll take the time to understand your current concerns, as well as any past injuries, illnesses, or other relevant history. A full-body examination will be carried out, with a focus on the area causing discomfort. To assess you properly, you may be asked to undress to your underwear, so wearing comfortable clothing like shorts or a sports top can be helpful.

Once the assessment is complete, I’ll explain what I’ve found and suggest a plan tailored to you. This may include hands-on osteopathic treatment along with self-care advice such as exercises, posture awareness, or ergonomic guidance.

If I feel that another health professional or your GP could help support your care, I’ll let you know and guide you accordingly.

If you’d like, you’re welcome to bring a friend or family member along to act as a chaperone during your appointment. Please note that anyone under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

Do I Need a GP Referral?

No referral from your GP is needed to book an appointment with me. However, if you’re taking any medication or have had recent medical tests, it’s helpful if you can bring along your prescription list and any relevant results to your first visit.

Is Osteopathy Covered by Medical Insurance?

Many health insurance providers include osteopathy in their coverage, but policies and requirements vary. Please check with your insurer to confirm your eligibility. If you plan to use your insurance, please let me know in advance.
