Understanding Osteopathy

What Is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a hands-on approach to healthcare that considers how the body’s structure and function work together.

Treatment is tailored to each individual, taking into account your symptoms, medical history, lifestyle and what you would like help with.

A Whole-Person Approach

Understanding the Whole Person

Osteopathy looks at the relationship between the body’s structure and the way it functions. Your osteopath will consider your symptoms alongside your medical history, previous injuries, lifestyle and everyday activities.

The aim is to understand your individual presentation and use appropriate hands-on treatment and advice to support your movement, comfort and wellbeing.

Your Appointment

How Does an Osteopath Treat?

Osteopathic treatment is individualised. Different techniques may be used depending on your symptoms, assessment findings and what is appropriate for you.

01

Assess

We discuss your symptoms, medical history and lifestyle before carrying out an appropriate physical assessment.

02

Understand

Your symptoms and assessment findings are considered together to build a clearer picture of what may be contributing to your discomfort.

03

Treat

Treatment is tailored to you and may include gentle hands-on techniques appropriate to your individual needs.

04

Review

We discuss how you are responding and whether further treatment or another approach may be appropriate.

A Gentle Approach

Cranial Osteopathy

Cranial osteopathy uses very gentle, subtle hands-on techniques. Although the approach is called “cranial”, treatment may involve different parts of the body rather than focusing only on the head.

The techniques are light and carefully adapted to the individual. Some people notice very little during treatment, while others describe sensations such as light pressure, movement or warmth.

I will always assess your individual circumstances and discuss whether this approach is appropriate for you or your child.

Everyone experiences treatment differently and there is no single expected response.

Babies & Children

Gentle Osteopathic Care for Younger Patients

I also see babies and children at my Hildenborough clinic. Appointments are adapted to the child’s age, development and individual needs.

Your baby or child does not need to remain completely still during an appointment. They may feed, sleep, move around or need a break, and the appointment can be adapted accordingly.
